Wizz Air has expanded its fleet in Skopje with a seventh aircraft, placing the Skopje International Airport among the company’s top bases. The stationing of an additional plane to Wizz Air’s Skopje base will mean more destinations and greater flight frequency. Two new routes have been established to Palermo and Alghero thanks to the addition of the new plane, with the first flights realized on July 15 and 18.
“This is the third largest base that Wizz Air has in general and I hope that very soon Skopje Airport will reach second place in terms of the number of aircraft placed at the airport. This is a great achievement, something that many national airlines cannot boast of and that is why I often say that Wizz Air has practically become the national air carrier of Macedonia,” Macedonian Deputy Prime Minister and Transport Minister Aleksandar Nikoloski said at the promotion of the new seventh Wizz Air plane in Skopje.
The Deputy PM pointed out that this is shown by the figures from the aviation sector and flight destinations, and pointed out that these successes are not accidental but are the result of joint work.
“In fact, the numbers show that. Namely, if the Wizz Air company alone transported 1,700,000 passengers last year, it has already transported 1,200,000 passengers in the first six months of this year, which clearly shows the growth. In the first six months, the two airports, Ohrid and Skopje, have over 2 million passengers. I hope that figure will continue in the second part of the year. And if a few years ago we were fighting for 2 million passengers per year, now I think that what was unthinkable – and that is 4 million passengers per year, is something that is realistically achievable. Many new destinations, many new air routes. Two opened just this week: to Alghero (Italy, Sardinia) and to Palermo (Italy, Sicily), and we are also talking about new airlines from Wroclaw and Katowice to Ohrid,” Nikoloski pointed out.
