Almost 70% of Macedonian citizens surveyed use a phone or screen before falling asleep, and more than 40% have faced sleep problems in the last three months. More than 63% of respondents reported sleeping 5-7 hours a night, 11.6% sleep less than 5 hours, while 22.8% sleep 7 to 9 hours. These are some of the results of the anonymous online survey conducted by the PHI University Psychiatry Clinic between March 2 and March 6, 2026, to which 491 respondents responded.

The survey was conducted on the occasion of the month of March, which the European Society for Sleep Research has declared as the month for raising awareness about sleep, under the motto “Sleep well, live better”.

According to the poll results, 44.6 percent of respondents would like more information or professional support to improve sleep quality, and almost the same percentage (42.2 percent) of respondents replied that they only sometimes feel rested after waking up. A third of respondents said that they feel rested, and 24 percent rarely feel rested after waking up. The largest percentage of respondents believes that sleep affects their mood (71 percent), concentration (64 percent) and work efficiency (63.3 percent).

As reported by the Psychiatry Clinic, these results indicate that a large proportion of citizens face problems in this segment and need more information and professional support to improve sleep.

The initiative aims to encourage all individuals and healthcare professionals to prioritize sleep health, and the University Psychiatry Clinic has joined this initiative, by educating citizens and offering assistance to improve sleep quality.
