The state matriculation exam for the 2025/2026 school year began on Saturday. A total of 14,587 high school graduates have registered to take the exams that complete their secondary education and qualify them for continuing their studies at higher education institutions or for entering the labor market.

The exam is conducted in schools where all legal and organizational conditions are met, and some students, at the request of the schools, take the exam in the amphitheaters of the nearest faculties.

Macedonian Minister of Education and Science Vesna Janevska, and the State Examination Center director Daniela Mihajlovska, visited the Faculty of Economics at the Sts. Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje, where students from the Vasil Antevski – Dren high school were taking the exam.

In a statement to the media, Minister Janevska wished all graduates success in their exams and emphasized that this year the matriculation exam is being implemented according to a new concept that allows for a fairer approach to student assessment.

“For the first time, the state matriculation exam is being implemented according to the new concept that provides for state, vocational and artistic graduation exams. In this way, students will be tested according to the curriculum they actually studied during secondary education, which is a significant step towards greater fairness and equal opportunities for all graduates,” said Janevska.

The minister informed that the type of graduation exam can also be chosen depending on whether and where the graduate would like to continue upgrading. As she said, higher education institutions announced at the end of last year what graduation exam a student can enroll in their study programs with.

High school graduates on Saturday are taking the first of two external exams – foreign language, mathematics or history, depending on the type of graduation exam chosen. The second external exam, in the mother tongue, will be held on June 11 and 12.

The State Examination Center head Mihajlovska informed that of the total number of registered high school graduates, 12,184 registered to take the state matriculation exam, 2,276 students for the state vocational matriculation exam and 127 registered for the state arts matriculation exam.
