78 years since the expulsion of Macedonian children from the Aegean region

Organized by the Union of Associations of Macedonians and Refugee Children from the Aegean Part of Macedonia MACEDON and co-organized by the Association of Macedonians from the Aegean Part of Macedonia “Sun of Kutlesh” – Skopje, today in front of the Monument to Refugee Children in the Woman – Fighter Park, the traditional commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the beginning of the Civil War in Greece 1946-1949 and the 78th anniversary of the expulsion of Macedonian children from the Aegean Part of Macedonia in 1948 will be held, the organization informed Sunday.

Between 28,000 and 32,000 children between the ages of 2 and 14 were “evacuated” in an organized manner by the Democratic Army of Greece (DAG) in the spring of 1948 before the end of the Greek Civil War.

With the agreement between the Provisional Democratic Government of Greece and the Eastern European countries (March–April 1948), Yugoslavia received 11,000, Romania 5,000, Czechoslovakia 3,000, Poland 2,500, Hungary 2,800, Bulgaria 2,500 and East Germany 1,120 children, who had been banned from traveling to Greece for decades.
