Unfortunately, the PISA results are again quite poor, but I want to stress that these are the results of the reforms that were previously carried out. We came to power in 2024, only six months later in 2025 these tests were carried out, Macedonian Minister of Education and Science Vesna Janevska said after the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) released the results of the international assessment PISA 2025 of 15-year-old students. As she said, the results of the reform, which is currently being carried out in the Macedonian education system, will be visible in about ten years.
According to the results of the PISA 2025 test, which measures problem-solving skills and the application of knowledge in real situations, Macedonian students achieved lower results than the average of OECD countries in all three main areas – mathematics, reading and science, as well as in the area of solving computer problems.
Macedonian 15-year-old students have lower results in mathematics compared to 2022, while achievements in reading and science remain at approximately the same level. Janevska pointed out that our students had better results than these in 2001.
“Unfortunately, in 2001 we had better results in reading and comprehension. We had the best results in 2018, which, according to teachers and analysis, is the result of the Cambridge reform. We will see the results of this reform, which is currently being implemented, when these students turn 15, which means in about 9-10 years. Unfortunately, it is not just about the programs. We will have to pay much more attention to other elements that make up the education system,” said Minister Janevska.
According to the results of PISA 2025, a decline in reading and mathematics performance has been observed at a global level, which is also due to artificial intelligence. When asked by a journalist how the system can deal with such a phenomenon that affects focus, concentration, and the way people learn, the minister replied that there are theses that technology has a significant impact on such results globally.
