The Macedonian Government and the Ministry of Digital Transformation are considering enacting legislation regarding the use of artificial intelligence, specifically focusing on its proper and ethical application, Minister of Digital Transformation Stefan Andonovski said Thursday.
According to the minister, this potential legislation is being considered within the framework of the national artificial intelligence strategy; the first draft of this strategy is set to be presented tomorrow by the working group responsible for its preparation.
Andonovski noted that the strategy would also include an action plan, described as a concise document containing very specific tasks for institutions. The minister expects the strategy to be adopted by the end of the year, following its posting on the Unified National Register of Regulations (ENER) and the holding of several public hearings.
“One of the strategy’s potential activities, something we are considering, is the enactment of a law on the use of artificial intelligence; this would not be about regulating the production or creation of AI, but rather about its proper, ethical, and principled use for the greater good. So, that is something we are looking at for 2027,” the Minister of Digital Transformation said in response to a reporter’s question.
In June 2026, Macedonia officially launched the “Vezilka” project, a National Artificial Intelligence Factory. As highlighted at the launch, its goal is to create an infrastructure for the development of modern technologies, research, and innovative solutions utilizing this technology; the project also aims to connect the domestic scientific community, state institutions, and the private sector with the European infrastructure for artificial intelligence development.
