MoI: 34 fewer road fatalities over eight months

During the first eight months of the year, the number of fatalities on Macedonian roads decreased by 34, while the total number of casualties dropped from 4,731 to 3,868. This represents 863 fewer people killed or injured, a reduction of 18.24 percent, Macedonian Ministry of Interior (MoI) said Thursday.

“These figures clearly confirm that a systemic approach to improving road safety is yielding concrete results,” the Ministry added.

The total number of traffic accidents fell from 5,485 to 4,840, a drop of 11.76%. Accidents resulting in fatalities dropped from 82 to 54 (down 34.15%), while accidents causing serious bodily injuries decreased from 594 to 528 (down 11.11%). Accidents involving bodily injuries decreased from 2,291 to 1,896 (down 17.24%), and accidents involving only material damage dropped from 2,518 to 2,362 (down 6.20%). The number of people sustaining bodily injuries fell from 3,949 to 3,116, a reduction of 21.09%, or 833 individuals. The number of persons sustaining serious bodily injuries remains at approximately the same level – 686 in 2025 and 690 in 2026.

As the Ministry of Interior points out, the significance of these results is even greater when considering that the number of traffic casualties had remained high for years. Between 2010 and 2025, the annual death toll from traffic accidents ranged from 116 to 198, with 132 fatalities recorded in both 2019 and 2025.
