Sustainability no longer a choice, but prerequisite for competitiveness, says PM

In recent years, the word “sustainability” has become one of the most frequently used in the global economy. But beneath this word lies much more than a simple new regulation, a new standard or a new administrative process. Beneath this word lies a fundamental shift in how the world operates. Today, successful companies are not only those that produce a quality product. Successful companies are those that know how to responsibly manage resources, how to invest in their people, how to create trust among investors, partners and consumers, Macedonian Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski said addressing Friday’s event “Turning Sustainability into Competitiveness: Building Resilient Businesses in an Uncertain World”.

Therefore, as the PM noted, when discussing a national vision for sustainable development, one does not only mean ecology, green policies or harmonization with European standards.

“This is regarding a model of economic development that creates security. A country that is resilient to crises; institutions that create trust; an economy that is capable of competing in the most developed markets; an economy that creates opportunities for young people to stay here, to establish companies, to invest and to build their future at home. Today, the world is significantly different from the one we knew just a few years ago. Wars, the energy crisis, disrupted supply chains, inflationary pressures and new geopolitical divisions have shown that economic stability can no longer be taken for granted,” Mickoski stressed.

In such conditions, according to the Macedonian PM, sustainability ceases to be a choice – it becomes a prerequisite for competitiveness.

“Companies that adapt in a timely manner will have access to new markets, new capital and new investors. Those that will invest in energy efficiency, digitalization, innovation and knowledge will be the companies that will lead economic development in the next decade,” said Prime Minister Mickoski.
