A delegation of the Democratic Union for Integration (DUI), led by party leader Ali Ahmeti, met Wednesday with Congressman Keith Self, chairman of the Subcommittee on Europe in the U.S. Congress.

The meeting discussed political developments in Macedonia, the importance of preserving the Ohrid Peace Agreement, as well as serious concerns about its erosion in state institutions, DUI informed.

“The interlocutors emphasized that the Ohrid (Framework) Agreement remains the foundation of peace, coexistence and multiethnic democracy in the country, but also one of the most significant strategic investments of the US in the region. Party leaderAhmeti expressed gratitude for “the role and continued commitment of the US in supporting the stability, security and Euro-Atlantic orientation of North Macedonia and the Western Balkans,” the partysaid in a press release.

DUI’s visit to Congress comes a few days after the U.S. State Department announced that the US is changing its doctrine on the Balkans.

“The United States is abandoning the policy of state-building and interventionism in the Western Balkans and is turning to cooperation, with a special emphasis on Bosnia and Herzegovina and the implementation of the Southern Gas Interconnection with Croatia,” states the US administration’s report to Congress on relations with the Western Balkans.

“The era of U.S.state-building policy is over,” reads the State Department’s report to the U.S. Congress, Croatian media reported on Sunday.

This confirms the U.S. administration’s turn towards this part of the world, stating that their policy is no longer focused on rescue or reconstruction, but on stability and mutually beneficial partnership.
