The prison sentence of former Supreme Court Judge Nakje Georgiev, who was convicted of accepting bribes, has been reduced after the Skopje Appellate Court accepted his request for conditional release and reversed the decision of the Criminal Court, which has become final.

According to the confirmed decision, Georgiev will not remain in prison until May 2027, but will be released this summer, which means that he will serve a total of about two years and two months, reports the Skopje 1 news website.

The Criminal Court earlier reduced his sentence so that he could be released from prison in September this year. Georgiev appealed that decision to the Appellate Court, where his sentence was additionally reduced by two more months.

In his appeal, Georgiev stated on his good behavior in prison, respected the rules, but also that he’s 63 years old and in poor health. These arguments were accepted by the court.

As is known, Judge Georgiev was caught taking a bribe worth EUR 10,000. He reached a plea agreement with the Prosecutor’s Office for Prosecuting Organized Crime and Corruption (PPO-OCC) in the case of accepting a bribe from the son of the former Novo Selo Mayor Boro Stojchev for a three-year prison sentence, as well as a three-year ban on exercising a profession, activity or official duty.
