Orthodox Christians celebrate Forgiveness Day – Prochka

What makes Prochka particularly impressive are the numerous customs that are performed: forgiveness, almsgiving, lighting ritual fires, fortune-telling for health and happiness, as well as symbolic rituals for cleansing from pests

Today marks the great holiday of Forgiveness Day (Prochka), also known as the Sunday before the Great Lent, which symbolically closes the winter holiday cycle and begins the long Easter Lent. This day holds a special place in folk tradition and is considered one of the most important Christian holidays, right after Christmas and Easter.

Prochka comes after the winter holidays such as Christmas Eve, Christmas, Epiphany and St. Trifun, and represents a transition to the rich series of spring celebrations – Todor’s Saturday, Mladenci, Blagoveshchenie, Palm Sunday, Lazar’s Saturday, Easter and St. George’s Day. This day begins the seven-week Easter Lent, a period of spiritual purification, renunciation and preparation for Christ’s resurrection.

What makes Prochka particularly impressive are the numerous customs that are performed: forgiveness, almsgiving, lighting ritual fires, fortune-telling for health and happiness, as well as symbolic rituals for cleansing from pests. Some of these traditions have a Christian basis, while others are remnants of old pre-Christian spring celebrations.
