Skopje Mayor Orce Gjorgjievski at a press conference on Thursday sent a strong message that Skopje is emerging from the financial and institutional collapse and entering a period of stabilization, development and the largest investment offensive in its history.
The mayor noted that upon taking office he found a collapsed system, a city on the verge of bankruptcy, public enterprises with blocked accounts, employees without salaries, dysfunctional institutions and debts of almost 300 million euros. The city’s account had only MKD 8 million of real available funds, while executive decisions of MKD 48 million were waiting on the same day.
“Instead of complaining, we rolled up our sleeves and started working. Today we can proudly say that Skopje is slowly getting back on its feet and moving forward,” Gjorgjievski pointed out.
In just two months, as the mayor informed, more than EUR 40 million in liabilities of the City and public enterprises have been reduced, the payment of wages has been normalized in the Drisla landfill, Communal Hygiene, Parks and Greenery, Lajka, Florakom and Luna, where previously two salaries were delayed, and liabilities of about MKD 450 million were being resolved.
