PM Mickoski on start of Moldova and Ukraine’s EU accession talks: Opposition in these countries are not traitors like ours

Macedonian Prime Minister HristijanMickoski, commenting on the opening of the first of the negotiations of Ukraine and Moldova with the European Union (EU), made several comparisons between these two countries and Macedonia, in which he mostly criticizes the opposition, accusing it of working against the interests of its own country while it was in power, and still does now.

Another difference, according to the PM, is that these two countries, as he said, have an opposition that does not work against the interests of its country and its citizens.

“The difference between these two countries and ours is that we control the entire territory of the state and do not have the problems they are facing, whereas the opposition there does not undermine the citizens, does not slander their government and does not work in the interest of other governments as is the case here, said PM Mickoski on Monday.

ThePMadded that the former authorities in these two countries also ensured consensus when it came to strategic issues and external challenges.

“The previous government (in Macedonia) did not do that, which was in a, I would say, quite desperate state at the time and was ready to kneel and accept a blank sheet of paper in order to remain in power. The citizens recognized that, punished them and sent them to the opposition, in the next elections they will also send them to the political margins, and the political memory of them will quickly fade and they will never happen again,” Mickoski pointed out.

The Prime Minister, in that context, indicated that the current government will continue to work, to build the economy and to deliver reforms, in accordance with the European Union’s Growth Plan.

“We will continue to build the Macedonian economy. There will be no overnight results. We have never promised miracles and we are not miracle workers. Anyone who promises miracles is not telling the truth. We only promise to work hard, and we are working. We will get what we deserve. Macedonia is accelerating and Macedonia will win, as it has won many times in the past,” said the Prime Minister.

EU Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos said before the start of Monday’s meeting of EU foreign ministers in Luxembourg that today is a mega Monday for EU enlargement, informing that Ukraine and Moldova will take their biggest step since the decision to start accession negotiations with the European Union in 2023.

“Finally, we will be able to open the first cluster for the two countries because they have delivered, and now it is time for us to deliver too,” says the EU Enlargement Commissioner.

Kos says that she expects the remaining five clusters to be opened by the two countries in July this year. In addition to Ukraine and Moldova opening Cluster 1 Monday, the EU Commissioner added, Montenegro will close two more chapters today, bringing it closer to closing half of the total number of chapters.
