Today marks 35 years since the death of Sashko Geshovski, the first victim in the conflict that caused the collapse of Yugoslavia, the Museum Gallery in Kavadarci said Wednesday. Numerous delegations will pay their respects today by laying fresh flowers.
“He was born in Kavadarci on October 31, 1971, he completed primary and secondary school in his hometown. After graduating from high school, he went to serve his military service in the Yugoslav People’s Army in Split – Republic of Croatia. On May 6, 1991, a masked member of the Ministry of Interior of the Republic of Croatia fired shots and fatally shot him with 4 bullets. Geshovski was on duty in front of the building of the Military Naval District in Split at the critical moment. He was the first victim in the conflict that caused the collapse of Yugoslavia in 1991,” the Museum Gallery said in a press release.
The Museum Gallery reminds that then, on May 7, a protest rally was held in Kavadarci, in which almost the entire population of the city and the surrounding area participated, to express their revolt for the death of their fellow citizen, candles were lit in the city square in honor of Geshovski.
“His remains were transported to Kavadarci by military helicopter. The funeral was attended by more than 20,000 citizens, who came from all over the former Yugoslavia. A three-day mourning period was declared in Kavadarci,” added the Museum Gallery.
In addition to Geshovski, Petre Todorovski from Kavadarci (born 1971) also died in the 1991 conflict.
“Todorovski died as a member of the Yugoslav People’s Army on July 26, 1991, in the Ljubljana-Polje barracks, Republic of Slovenia. He lost his young life as a soldier, while on guard duty. Mishko Mitrev, born in 1954 in Vatasha, also died in this conflict. Mitrev died as a non-commissioned officer in the Yugoslav People’s Army in September 1991, while defending the barracks in Gjakovo,” the Museum Gallery added.
